Kai Havertz and Mason Mount scored as Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners over Bournemouth in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Havertz provided the breakthrough in the 16th minute of the game before setting up Mount and the England international doubled the hosts’ lead in the 24th minute.
The result leaves Graham Potter’s side eighth in the table, now six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, while Bournemouth remain in 14th.
Chelsea came into the game on the back of three consecutive Premier League defeats, picking up just two points from their last five league games, but managed to record their first league win since mid-October.
The first serious chance of the game came in the ninth minute when Marc Cucurella sent a great cross onto the head of Havertz, but the Germany international fired a header over the bar.
Chelsea wanted a penalty in the 12th minute when Adam Smith caught Christian Pulisic by the shirt in the Bournemouth box, but the referee was not interested.
The Blues broke through in the 16th minute when Havertz latched onto Raheem Sterling’s excellent low pass to head in at the far post.
Chelsea then doubled their lead in the 24th minute when Mount deftly picked out the bottom corner after Havertz found the Englishman outside the box.
The hosts rattled the Bournemouth goal for a third time late in the first half, but Pulisic was sent off for a foul on Havertz’s Adam Smith.
Mark Travers then had to deny a Reece James rebound before denying Sterling minutes later as Potter’s side threatened to take the game away from their rivals before the break.
On his return, James had to be substituted early in the second half, with the Englishman replaced by César Azpilicueta.
Jaidon Anthony’s deflected shot was saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga just before the hour before Havertz fired one off the post at the other end of the pitch.
Jefferson Lerma fired home Kepa’s 72nd-minute goal, Bournemouth certainly showed more intent in the second half but Chelsea were still dangerous and Kalidou Koulibaly headed over the bar two minutes later.
Ryan Christie was next to go close for Bournemouth, with the Chelsea goalkeeper denying the midfielder with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Antony curled in a late free-kick and Kepa fired over the bar before Dominic Solanke fired wide as Chelsea managed to earn a clean sheet despite late pressure from the Cherries.
Chelsea face Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day, while Bournemouth will look to return to winning ways when they host Crystal Palace on December 31.
