FC Bayern lost 3-0 to Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

Manchester City beat Bayern Munich 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Rodri put the hosts ahead in the 27th minute before Bernardo Silva and Erling Braut Haaland scored in the second half to put the Premier League giants on the verge of reaching the semi-finals.

The two teams face each other in Munich next week, in the second leg, with Bayern needing a great result to avoid falling into the round of 16 of the competition.

Man City had their first chance of the game in the seventh minute when Kevin De Bruyne found Ilkay Gundogan in the Bayern penalty area, but the midfielder’s header always went over the bar.

In Bayern’s first goal four minutes later, Alphonso Davies shot from distance, but the Canadian international’s shot went wide of Ederson’s post.

Visiting goalkeeper Yann Sommer almost conceded a goal for Man City in the 14th minute when he stayed too long on the ball, allowing Haaland to close in, but the Swiss international managed to pose the threat to put the visitors at bay.

Pep Guardiola’s side continued to pass and test as the first half progressed, with Jack Grealish and Silva seeing plenty of the ball in wide areas and the pair, unsurprisingly, trying to deliver to Haaland whenever possible.

Brilliant saving by Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich saw the German ahead of Gundogan in the 21st minute, with the City captain threatening a cross before Haaland was saved by Sommer shortly after the hosts took the matter further.

Jamal Musiala blocked a shot on goal for Man City in the 25th minute as the German champions found space in the final third.

However, the hosts opened the scoring in the 27th minute and it was a spectacular goal from Rodri, who hit the long-range top corner.

Man City came close to finishing runners-up in the 34th minute when Sommer nervously crossed for Gundogan under pressure from Grealish, but the Bayern goalkeeper made an impressive save to deny the experienced midfielder and force a corner.

Bayern had the last chance of the first half in extra time, but Leroy Sané’s brilliant long-range strike went wide of Ederson’s crossbar.

Sané also had the first chance of the second half, with Ederson saving the long-range shot; The two players met again in the 49th minute, with the Man City goalkeeper gaining the lead after the former Citizens striker ran into the penalty area.

A period of panic at the other side followed, with errors from Dayot Upamecano and then Sommer leading to a Haaland shot from inside the penalty area, but Kimmich was there to make a brilliant save.

Ederson then saved another shot from Sane in the 54th minute before Bayern headed in two corners, Matthijs de Ligt and Kingsley Coman missing.

Nathan Ake followed, the defender testing Sommer’s reactions in the 57th minute before Bayern goalkeeper Dias made an expert save from close range to somehow make it 1-0 in the last 30 minutes of the first leg. .

However, Man City doubled their lead in the 70th minute when Silva headed Haaland’s cross from the crossbar into the back of the net after Upamecano had carelessly lost to Grealish in a dangerous area.

Julian Alvarez nearly added the home team’s third in the 75th minute, but his low shot was saved by Sommer before Davies could break free under pressure from Silva.

However, Haaland made it 3-0 for Guardiola’s side in the 76th minute when the Norwegian scored at the back post after John Stones had entered the danger area, taking his tally to 45 goals in all competitions for the season.

Alvarez narrowly deflected another shot in the 82nd minute before Sommer saved Rodri’s header well and the hosts were hoping for more goals.

However, Man City ended up winning 3-0, leaving them in a dominant position in time to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

Guardiola Said,

“We scored a lot of goals in this competition in many, many games.

“It was not comfortable at all. Emotionally I am destroyed – I have [aged] 10 more years today. It was such a demanding game.

“Now we have to relax, take a day off, prepare for Leicester and after we travel.

“I know what we have to do there, and we have to perform really well.

“It was an incredible result but we have to do our game with a huge, huge personality because they are a top team.

“We are going there to score the goals and to try to win the game. To do that will be so difficult.”
